Rock Formation

Oil on panel, 8"x10"

Another scene from Big Bend National Park.

A Touch of Green on the Arroyo

Oil on canvas, 24"x36"

This is a scene along an arroyo in Big Bend National Park. It was painted from photos taken in July of 2011. Most of the state experienced one of the worst droughts in recent history, and I found it very interesting how the flora nearest the arroyo was green while the majority of the desert plants were barely clinging to life.

The photo of this painting is not very good. I had a very difficult time getting a usable image of this painting because of its' size

Clear Skies in the Bend

Oil on panel, 8"x10"

This painting continues a tradition I have maintained for a few years now by starting and completing a painting of Big Bend on New Years Day. I painted this pretty quick and it is quite loose so I may make minor adjustments after this layer has dried.

Happy New Year to ALL and thanks for following my work.

"Mountains and Clouds"

Oil on panel, 10"x0"

This is a scene I have repainted a couple times on this canvas panel. It was done from a photo taken out the window of a car I was passenger in as the car was speeding along the highway. The entire foreground was blurred out but the background mountains and clouds were in focus and were my purpose for taking the photo.

"Land of the Yucca"

Oil on panel, 8"x10"

This scene is from Dagger Flats in Big Bend National Park. The area is known for its' proliferation of Faxon Yucca. Occasionally they all bloom simultaneously and cover the horizon with magnificent aromatic flowers. They attract bees, humming birds and a multitude of insect varieties. Dagger Flats is off the beaten trail in the north east portion of the park, rarely visited, when the Faxon bloom it is a jewel to behold.

"Cactus and Rock"

Oil on panel, 8"x10"

I found this cactus was growing in the Basin of The Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. I slightly modified the design of the cactus and rocks to create more pleasing shapes.

"Desert Color"

Oil on panel. 6"x8"

This is a view of Panther Peak in Big Bend National Park. The drought of the past year has killed and stressed desert plants that usually survive with under 10 inches of rainfall per year. The stress on the plants has created more color than usual and after a recent trace rainfall the plants immediately sprout new growth and green color.

"Heat in the Bend"

OIl on panel, 8"x10"

This is another painting that was started on location in Big Bend National Park. I had pulled off to the side of the main park road and set up to do this painting. It was getting late in the day and I noticed to the west of me, an isolated storm erupted over Tule mountain. Shortly after that, the wind began to gust and picked my easel up with painting attached and tossed it into the air. Luckily it came right to me and I was able to grab it from flight and rescue the painting but it happened to spill all of my turp on the road. So that ended my painting for the day.
